The Swiss, apparently, would rather people didn't permanently partake in their chocolate, cheese, and watches. Against all expectations as well as the federal parliament's wishes, the country narrowly voted (in a 50.3 percent majority) to impose a cap on its number of foreign immigrants. The referendum on “mass migration” was proposed by a right-wing group. Now, Switzerland will have to put at least some limits on immigrants, including those from European Union countries, which could strain its continental standing. Pascal Sciarini, a Swiss political scientist, said the country faces economic “chaos” because now all of its diplomatic and trade agreements within the EU will have to be renegotiated.
