Kim Jonk-uk, the detained South Korean missionary, finally made a public appearance in North Korea—in which he appeared before the media to read a statement “confessing” anti-state crimes. In the prepared statement, Kim said he was operating under orders from South Korea's Intelligence Services to set up an underground church in order to collect information. "I was thinking of turning North Korea into a religious country, and destroying its present government and political system," he said. Another missionary who was recently freed, 85-year-old American Merrill Newman, gave a similar statement last year, which he now says he was forced to give.
