    Hagel: Should Review Transgender Ban

U.S. Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel delivers remarks on NATO expansion and European security at the Wilson Center in Washington May 2, 2014. Russia's actions in Ukraine have shattered the myth of European security in the post-Cold War era and underscored the danger NATO allies have created by failing to meet their defense spending pledges, Hagel said on Friday. On Sunday, Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel said he believed the military should review its ban on transgender Americans serving in the armed forces. "Every qualified American who wants to serve our country should have an opportunity if they fit the qualifications and can do it," he said on ABC's This Week. He did not say the ban should be overturned, but rather "continually should be reviewed." Although gay men and lesbians have been allowed to openly serve in the military since 2010, Hagel said it is different with transgender people. "These issues require medical attention," he said, that make it more complicated to allow them to serve.
