At least 40 Europe-bound African migrants died as their boat capsized off the coast of Libya. According to Libyan Interior Minister Rami Kaal, approximately 50 others have been rescued, but an unspecified number are still missing. The boat was about 37 miles off of the coast of Tripoli when it ran into trouble en route to its destination, most likely Italy or Malta. Libya is a popular transit route for African immigrants fleeing their homeland. They will pay up to $1,000 for the crowded boat rides to Europe. Libya has struggled to control its borders and the flow of immigrants. In March, the Italian navy rescued more than 4,000 immigrants from overcrowded boats over just four days.
