United Nations experts have slammed the motor city, claiming it's violating human rights by cutting off water services over unpaid bills. Detroit declared bankruptcy last July, and the city is majorly hurting. In June, Detroit began cutting off water to 3,000 customers per week, with around 30,000 households expected to suffer in the next few months. On Wednesday. U.N. officials said, "Disconnection of water services because of failure to pay due to lack of means constitutes a violation of the human right to water and other international human rights.” Leilani Farha, a housing rights expert, added that "if these water disconnections disproportionately affect African Americans they may be discriminatory, in violation of treaties the United States has ratified.”
