Dozens of Women Escape Boko Haram

More than 60 women and girls have escaped from Boko Haram a month after being abducted, according to Nigerian officials. When the Islamist militant group attacked a military base near Damboa in north-eastern Borno state Friday night, the women seized their chance and fled. According to AFP, a high-level security official confirmed the escape, and local vigilante Abbas Gava said he “received an alert from my colleagues that about 63 of the abducted women and girls had made it back home.” He praised the women, saying: “They took the bold step when their abductors moved out to carry out an operation.” It was reportedly a successful night for the Nigerian military, which killed more than 50 rebels during their attack. However, Boko Haram is still holding more than 200 girls who were abducted in April.
