Peruvian police displayed 8.5 tons of cocaine in a hangar at Lima’s airport, saying it was the largest seizure ever in the South American country. The drugs were seized in a raid last week and flown to the capital, accompanied by officers wearing white jackets and surgical masks. The drugs were discovered in a rural home in the port of Trujillo. The coke had been found in plastic-wrapped bricks sealed inside chunks of coal. Police arrested six Peruvians and two Mexican nationals in the case. It’s not clear how much of an impact the seizure will have in Peru, which is now the world’s top cocaine producer.
