More than half of the threats against President Obama are made online, but government officials are questioning how adept the Secret Service has been at handling them. The Secret Service is struggling to find ways to parse through social-media postings to determine which statements should set off red flags and which are innocuous. “I don’t know if they’ve adapted to these new threats,” said Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-UT), who chairs the House Oversight and Government Reform subcommittee on national security. “Are there new and creative ways of detecting them? I’m not convinced they’ve tied those loops.” The Secret Service has been under increased scrutiny after a man armed with a knife was able to break into the White House. Last week, Secret Service Director Julia Pierson resigned in response to the recent errors.
