A three-month state of emergency has been declared in the north and center of Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula after a suicide car bombing killed 30 soldiers and wounded dozens more. “The army and the police will take all necessary measures to tackle the dangers of terrorism and its financing, to preserve the security of the region…and protect the lives of citizens,” read a presidential decree. The suicide bombing was carried out by a suspected jihadist. Gunmen also shot and killed an officer and wounded two more soldiers at another checkpoint.
