According to a memo released Thursday by Attorney General Eric Holder, the Justice Department will now interpret federal law to prohibit workplace discrimination against transgender people. The Justice Department will be able to bring legal claims on behalf of people who say they have been discriminated against because of their sex identity. The federal government will also no longer be able to take the position that the sex discrimination-banning Title VII of the Civil Rights Act does not explicitly protect against workplace discrimination based on gender status.
