A listeria outbreak linked to prepackaged caramel apples has caused five deaths and 21 hospitalizations, according to a statement from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. 10 states have reported a total of 28 people infected with listeria. The CDC warned consumers to avoid pre-packaged, commercially-produced caramel apples, including those with toppings such as nuts, chocolate or sprinkles until more information is available. Nine of the 28 illnesses occurred in a pregnant woman or her newborn.
