Police in the Mexican border state of Baja California have arrested more than 200 people in a crackdown on farmworker protests that have led to road blockages, officials said Wednesday. Farmworkers are demanding higher wages, overtime pay, benefits, medical care, and an end to sexual harassment by bosses, according to a statement posted on the website of one of the demonstration’s organizers. Laborers near San Quintin typically make less than $8 a day and are asking for a raise to about $20 a day, some protesters said. The Baja California state government said 200 people were arrested on suspicion of vandalism and blocking roads, while some protest images show people lighting trash fires on the road.
