A massive earthquake with a magnitude of 7.6 reportedly hit near Papua New Guinea Monday, prompting a tsunami warning shortly after, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The earthquake struck about 34 miles from Kokopo Panguna on New Britain Island. The Hawaii-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said preliminary earthquake parameters show "hazardous tsunami waves are possible." No destructive tsunami was anticipated but the center warned of huge waves between 3 and 10 feet along the Papua New Guinea coastline.
