Officials believe the thieves who used the IRS's own online service to steal personal tax information are based in Russia, the Associated Press reported Wednesday. "Get Transcript" was targeted between February and mid--May and used to access information on file with the IRS, including the personal tax information of more than 100,000 U.S. taxpayers. Two officials briefed on the incident told the AP the agency believes the hackers were located in Russia, based on computer data about who accessed the information. IRS Commissioner John Koskinen did not tell reporters where the crime originated.
