Artist Ai Weiwei got his passport back from the Chinese government Wednesday, after being banned from leaving the country by authorities since 2011. “Today, I received a passport,” Ai wrote on social media. The renowned artist and activist was detained in Beijing in 2011, interrogated for months, and then told his studio owed $2.4 million in taxes and fees in what Ai has said was a political attack. Ai says his first trip will be to Germany, where his young son has been living for the last year.
