After denying Chinese dissident artist Ai Weiwei a six-month work visa for not disclosing a supposed criminal conviction, the U.K. quickly changed their mind amid a backlash and apologized for the mistake. In 2011, Ai, who has often criticized the Chinese government through his work, was arrested and jailed for three months on the suspicion of tax evasion. He was never officially charged—and should not be recognized as a criminal case. Ai had just recently received his passport back from the Chinese government, which will allow him to travel to his many major exhibitions throughout the world. His next show, in London, is opening in September.
