On Friday, President Obama announced his nomination of openly gay Eric Fanning for the next Secretary of the Army. Fanning is also very active in the LGBT community and will be the first out service chief, if confirmed by the Senate. The call for Fanning’s position comes in a series of pushes for LGBT equality by the Obama administration. Fanning has acted as undersecretary of the Army since June and would be in charge of budgetary strains within the Army and addressing suicides rates among post-war soldiers.
