The U.S. military said early Tuesday it had fired an airstrike on the Afghan city of Kunduz, which was captured by the Taliban just a day before. Afghan forces have also launched operations on several fronts to retake the city and have cleared the area surrounding its central prison and police headquarters, said police spokesman Sayed Sarwar Hossini. U.S. forces had carried out an airstrike “to eliminate a threat to coalition and Afghan forces” in the area, said U.S. Army Col. Brian Tribus, a spokesman for the U.S. and NATO missions in Afghanistan. The insurgent attack on Kunduz is the first time the Taliban have seized control of a major Afghan city since 2001.
