U.S. military officials are weighing the possibility of embedding American troops with the Iraqi military as part of a bolstered campaign against the Islamic State. Embedded U.S. troops would have the ability to call in airstrikes, which would bring American involvement in Iraq to a new level. U.S. forces are currently embedded at the “base” level, meaning they do not see direct combat.
