In response to a continuing refugee crisis, Austria decided on Saturday to temporarily suspend the Schengen agreement on open borders. Chancellor Werner Faymann said the decision was motivated by the failure of the European Union to address the problem of refugee allocation and border security. Germany had already begun to send hundreds of refugees back over the Austrian border in response to the crisis. Norway, Sweden and Denmark, all of which are part of the Schengen agreement, took similar measures to close the borders.
