Turkish border officials have allegedly attacked Syrian refugees that were trying to enter the country, killing five people and injuring 14 more, Human Rights Watch reports. The refugees are said to have been beaten and shot. “Firing at traumatized men, women, and children fleeing fighting and indiscriminate warfare is truly appalling,” said Gerry Simpson, senior refugee researcher at the organization. “While senior Turkish officials claim they are welcoming Syrian refugees with open borders and open arms, their border guards are killing and beating them.” Turkey denied the accusations but a spokesman said Tuesday that an “open-door policy” is not the same as having open borders.
