Dallas police have identified Micah Johnson of Texas as the sniper who killed five officers during a Black Lives Matter protest Thursday night. At a press conference before Johnson was identified, Chief David Brown said the 25-year-old man told police he was killing white officers for killing black men. The suspect also said he acted alone. Johnson has no known criminal record. A U.S. defense official confirmed to The Daily Beast that Johnson was a member of the U.S. Army Reserve.
Around 9 p.m. local time Thursday night, the gunman opened fire, injuring seven officers in addition to the five he murdered. Two civilians—including a mother protecting her children—were injured in the assault. After several hours of negotiation with the perpetrator, who had cornered himself in a parking garage, police deployed a robot with explosives. “The male suspect was killed by the bomb,” Dallas police chief David Brown confirmed.
