Iran has announced that Russia is no longer using an air base in the country for strikes on Syria. Iran Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Qasemi said Monday, “Russia has no base in Iran and is not stationed here. They did this [operation] and it is finished for now.” Russia was sending long-range bombers and fighter bombers through the Nojeh air base near Hamadan. Iran’s defense minister criticized Russia for announcing the cooperation last week to news agencies. Gen. Hossein Dehghan said Russia’s statements about the cooperation were evidence of a “kind of show-off and ungentlemanly” nature and were a “betrayal of trust.” The use of the air base by Russia was also the first time any foreign power had used an Iranian base for those purposes since World War II.
