The already star-studded list of victims of British phone hackers has just added two marquee names. An associate of Jonathan Rees, a private investigator who worked for publications owned by Rupert Murdoch, says Rees targeted former prime minister Tony Blair and Kate Middleton, who was dating Prince William at the time. Other names allegedly on his target list include Prince Edward, government ministers, and leaders of the Bank of England. Rees is also accused of paying a computer hacker to glean data about secret MI6 agents who infiltrated the Provisional IRA. He was previously suspected of hacking several famous musicians, athletes, and other celebrities. The news adds new pressure on London’s Metropolitan Police, who are accused of initially acting too timidly in investigating allegations of phone hacking. The scandal has implicated high-ranking executives at News International, one of Murdoch’s companies.
