Secretary of State Hillary Clinton told reporters in Ecuador that the proposed U.N. sanctions against Iran for their suspected nuclear program will be the “most significant sanctions” the country has seen. “The amount of unity that has been engendered by the international community is very significant,” she said. The 15-nation U.N. Security Council will vote Wednesday on the proposed sanctions, which calls on countries to block financial transactions with Iran and ban the licensing of Iran’s banks if there is information that these activities contribute to the nuclear program. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates said the measure will pass, despite concerns from Brazil and Turkey, two countries on the Security Council.
