Based on the number of people on stage singing along with Stephen Colbert on the final episode of The Colbert Report, there’s a strong chance that you were there yourself.
Colbert wrapped up his show singing "We’ll Meet Again," joined at first by Jon Stewart, and then by, quite literally, dozens of disparate personalities and performers, from iconic singers Randy Newman, Michael Stipe and Willie Nelson to fellow TV anchors Tom Brokaw and Katie Couric to political figures Henry Kissinger, Mike Huckabee and Cory Booker.
The volume of talent on the stage to wrap up the final Colbert Report stands as a testament to the indelible mark the show made on the culture and the gaping hole it now leaves behind, even at the prospect of Colbert hosting The Late Show starting in May 2015. After all, if the likes of Andrew Sullivan, James Franco, Paul Krugman, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Cookie Monster can share a stage comfortably, we’re clearly losing something very special.
