Kirsten Gillibrand and John Thune will be just one of the odd couplings on display at Tuesday’s State of the Union address, where many legislators will be sitting next to a member of the opposite party in order to show unity in Congress. Gillibrand’s fellow New York senator, Chuck Schumer, also a Democrat, will be seen alongside Oklahoma Republican Tom Coburn. Democrat Dick Durbin of Illinois and his Republican colleague Mark Kirk will also share a view. "I'm bringing the popcorn; he's bringing a Coke with two straws," Durbin joked. Overall, about 20 legislators have announced their intention to cross the aisle for the big speech.
