When 15-year-old Phoebe Prince (above) committed suicide in January 2010 after being targeted by school bullies, it set off a firestorm of attention to what many media outlets have called a bullying epidemic. As the 2010 school year began, we saw four more suicides, all involving students who were targeted for being gay (whether or not they were). Gay, lesbian, and transgender students are four times more likely to commit suicide and twice as likely to face school bullying than their heterosexual counterparts. The most recent case involves a young Rutgers University student, who threw himself off the George Washington Bridge after discovering that his tryst with another man had been recorded and live-streamed over the Internet by his college roommate, who has been charged (along with another student) with invasion of privacy. A look at some of the most horrific tales of bullying and suicide.
