A man in Germany who was convicted of training in Pakistan with an al Qaeda offshoot in order to bomb U.S. targets based in Germany was released early from prison this week. Fritz Gelowicz, 36, was sentenced in 2010 to serve 12 years and was discharged by a Düsseldorf court because he was no longer believed to be a danger. His good behavior and earlier time served while awaiting trial were also factors. He will be required to regularly check in with a probation officer, officials said. His defense attorney, Dirk Uden, told reporters that his client had expressed remorse and co-operated fully with authorities. “I’m sure he will not use any violence against anybody,” he said. The United States has officially designated him a terrorist, and he is on a sanctions list by the United Nations.
