Police officers in Hammond, Indiana are accused of excessive force and battery in a federal lawsuit filed by a man arrested last month. Police smashed a car window and used a Taser on Jamal Jones to remove him from a car. Police say it was a routine traffic stop that involved the driver not wearing her seat belt, but that Jones repeatedly resisted law enforcement and refused to aid an office. Jones refused to lower his window or exit the vehicle and kept reaching behind the console, according to the officers. Police then smashed the window and used a Taser out of fear “the occupants of the vehicle may have possessed a weapon.” The incident was filmed by the driver’s 14-year-old son, who was in the car with his 7-year-old sister. Jones's lawsuit claims that police actions “were taken intentionally with malice, willfulness, and reckless indifference.”
