New details have emerged in the case of Farooque Ahmed, the man charged with plotting to set off a bomb on the D.C. Metro system. FBI authorities say they learned of the man after he attempted to contact a terrorist cell, hoping to wage a “jihad” against U.S. troops serving in Afghanistan. Agents then posed as al Qaeda operatives and met Ahmed, after which he helped them plan a proposed attack on D.C. Ahmed “stated he wanted to kill as many military personnel as possible,” according to FBI agent Charles A. Dayoub. Ahmed, who had trained himself in martial arts and weapons use, told the FBI the attack would be “operational” next month. He now faces 50 years in prison.
