A Delaware prison standoff ended Thursday with the death of a corrections officer, state officials said. The officer was later identified by the department of corrections commissioner as Sgt. Steven Floyd, a 16-year veteran of the department. Another officer who was taken hostage was rescued from the Vaughn Correctional Center in Smyrna and is being treated at a local hospital. “She is alert and talking,” according to a statement released by the agency. Gov. John Carney said in a statement that he was praying for the fallen officer’s family. “This was a long and agonizing situation,” Carney said. “Our priority now will be to determine what happened and how this happened. We will hold accountable anyone who was responsible. And we will make whatever changes are necessary to ensure nothing like it ever happens again.” The hostage situation began Wednesday when inmates captured four prison employees in the all-male facility.
