Could Sarah Palin be Democrats’ biggest asset heading into midterm elections? That’s the case that David Plouffe, a main architect of President Obama’s 2008 campaign, made on Sunday “Mitch McConnell and John Boehner are bad enough, but they’re not the real Republican Party,” Plouffe said at an annual steak fry honoring the state’s Democratic senator Tom Harkin. “It is Sarah Palin and Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck. That is the power. All of these Republican candidates have to pledge allegiance to them, their intolerance and their backwards thinking.” David Axlerod, another campaign veteran who now serves as a senior adviser to Obama, echoed Plouffe. Axelrod and Plouffe were using the occasion to stir their Democrat base, something that many see as crucial to counterbalance the recent wave of energy and grassroots organizing among Republicans. Palin will make her first trip of the year to Iowa on Friday, further stoking rumors of a 2012 presidential run.
