The family of Eric Garner, who died after being placed in a chokehold by New York City police, has filed a claim to sue the city, the NYPD and six officers for $75 million. Garner's relatives filed the notice, the first legal step toward suing over the death of the 43-year-old, on Monday. A spokesman for city Comptroller Scott Stringer sad the claim is under review and the city's Law Department also said it will review the matter. The NYPD did not immediately comment. Garner was stopped by police on Staten Island on July 17 on suspicion of selling loose, untaxed cigarettes. An onlooker's video showed the unarmed Garner telling officers refusing to be handcuffed. An officer responded by putting him in a chokehold, which is banned under police policy. Garner, who had asthma, was later pronounced dead at hospital, and the city medical examinier found the chokehold contributed to his death. A grand jury will determine whether criminal charges are filed.
