News that President Obama is reportedly considering Anna Wintour for a plush ambassadorship to the UK or France sent strongly opinionated shockwaves through the media this week. But regardless if you’re on Team Anna or Team Seasoned Diplomacy, no opinion could contend with the importance of one dispatched on Twitter just 21 hours ago. Donald Trump, king of timely Internet soundbites, has ruled in Wintour’s favor.
“I am happy to hear that Pres.Obama is considering giving Anna Wintour @Voguemagazine an ambassadorship. She is a winner & really smart!’ Trump tweeted.
Trump and Wintour’s relationship actually goes way back. When Marc Jacobs was cash-strapped to stage an early-career fashion show, Wintour convinced Trump to let the then-young-designer use The Plaza Hotel’s ballroom free of charge. All Trump required was a front row seat in return. And Trump’s daughter Ivanka once famously refused Wintour’s invitation to work at Vogue after graduating from the University of Pennsylvania.
But since it’s Trump who’s voice dispatched yesterday’s ruling, animosity was sure to follow. His tweet spurred reaction from a handful of his near 2 million followers including, @Aiwekuchbhi’s “You are fired!!” and @Domjolyscat’s “@realDonaldTrump you should be ambassador 2 Equatorial Guinea? It’s got a lot of money, is [redacted] unpleasant and nobody cares what it thinks.”
