A year after Harvard was rocked by a cheating scandal, the college’s embattled dean, Evelynn Hammonds, is stepping down. The announcement doesn’t mention the scandal, saying instead that she will return to teaching and scholarship after taking a sabbatical, but in recent months students have been calling for her resignation. Following revelations that Hammonds ordered secret searches of staff emails in connection to the cheating scandal, The Harvard Crimson demanded that she resign “for the good of the University.” “Hammonds negligently disregarded faculty legislation and breached the community’s trust,” the Crimson staff wrote in an editorial. “Her conduct is not acceptable for a Dean of Harvard College.”
