While British police struggle to make sense of one man’s shooting spree this week, one possible reason has emerged. Derrick Bird, who gunned down 12 people from his car, was worried about going to jail for tax evasion. Bird will not be going to jail now as he was found dead, an apparent suicide, in a wooded area when the shootings were over. A friend of Bird’s told police that he was being investigated by Inland Revenue over 60,000 British pounds, or about $90,000, that had cropped up in his bank account. "He just asked me if he could handle jail,” the friend said. “He didn't want to go." Police are still trying to establish whether the killings were random or if Bird held some kind of grudge against the victims.
