After a marathon presidential race, Haiti finally has a winner: Michel "Sweet Micky" Martelly is set to become the country’s new leader, according to an anonymous official who confirmed the results. Martelly, a former carnival singer, defeated former first lady Mirlande Manigat, allegedly winning the election by a 3-1 margin. But both the first and second election rounds suggested fraud and irregular voting. On Sunday afternoon, roughly 15 to 18 percent of the tallies had been removed from the final vote count. Haiti is swarming with strong, warring opinions, with Manigat supporters claiming her victory before it was official and Martelly supporters threatening violence if he does not triumph. The U.N. peacekeeping mission and Haitian National Police have ramped up security in the capital and other key cities.
