Is this the intern revolution? Three former interns for Gawker filed a lawsuit Saturday in New York against the gossip blog for violating minimum-wage law. The former interns say they all worked at least 15 hours a week on Gawker media blogs and were “not paid a single cent.” “Gawker employs numerous other ‘interns’ in the same way, paying them nothing or underpaying them and utilizing their services to publish its content on the Internet, an enterprise that generates significant amounts of revenue for Gawker,” the plaintiffs allege in the lawsuit. The lawsuit comes on the heels of a judge’s ruling last month that unpaid internships must not use interns for “essential” tasks that a paid employee would otherwise do.
