Someone cue the Law & Order credit music: Famed Manhattan District Attorney Robert Morgenthau will retire at the age of 89 in lieu of running for what could have been his tenth term in office. The inspiration for Law & Order's frown-creased DA Adam Schiff, Morgenthau was a boyhood friend of JFK's and became a US attorney during his presidency. Among Morgenthaus's most famous cases as Manhattan DA were the convictions of rapper Tupac Shakur, "Preppy killer" Robert Chambers, and a multi-billion dollar international fraud case against bank BCCI. Morgenthau's most high-profile failure was the 1989 Central Park jogger case, involving false confessions from five Harlem juveniles. Morgenthau's career as Manhattan DA is the longest any one person has ever held the position, arguably one of the most high-profile law enforcement jobs in the nation.
