Police in Raleigh, North Carolina, say they shot and killed a suspect on Monday afternoon, but family members say 24-year-old Akiel Denkins, who was black, was running away at the time and was unarmed. A police spokesman said “a firearm was located within close proximity” of Denkins. Raleigh’s police chief said an officer was chasing Denkins on foot when he “was shot and killed by the officer.” The police chief said: “Our thoughts and our prayers go out to all involved in today’s incident.” At least one family member reportedly said “four or five people” told her that Denkins was unarmed and running from police when “he was shot seven times by a white officer.” More than 300 people held a vigil after the shooting.
