Guchi bags, Lewis Viton glasses and Dizney DVDs will all be harder to come by in the United States from now on. In an effort to push back against the tide of Internet piracy, and buttress protection of intellectual property rights, federal Customs agents seized 82 websites that sell counterfeit goods, the Justice Department announced Monday. Though most of the goods are made in China, the domain names were registered in the United States, allowing American agents to shut down the sites and seize the domain names. Attorney General Eric Holder said billions of dollars are lost in the American economy every year as a result of counterfeit merchandise. Warning about phony goods, Holder told consumers, “If a deal seems too good to be true, it probably is."
