Julie & Julia—Nora Ephron’s wildly popular film about cookbook author Julia Child and blogger Julie Powell makes you want to run out and buy all of the ingredients for boeuf bourguignon immediately after seeing it. Apparently, people took the bait—48 years after its publication, Child’s
Mastering the Art of French Cooking is a
bestseller for the first time.
The New York Times reports that Julia fans (and women in particular) are buying copies of the book in droves, despite its somewhat antiquated use of butter (by the stickful), and fat (duck lard, preferably). Not that Americans need to gain another 20 pounds, collectively, but thanks to Julia (and Nora), we’re headed there in a hurry.
