Steve McQueen, Ali MacGraw, and Barbara Minty
Befitting his anti-hero persona, Steve McQueen was behind many a romantic scuffle. Although his co-star in the 1972 action adventure film
, Ali MacGraw, was married to legendary movie producer Robert Evans at the time, the two could not help themselves. "It was very, very passionate, and dramatic, and hurtful, and ecstatic,"
MacGraw told Vanity Fair
earlier this year. "It was pretty much a wipeout for both of us." A year after their movie premiered, the two married. But in 1977, McQueen allegedly became smitten with model Barbara Minty, whom he saw in a Club Med ad, and wanted to audition her for his new movie. She flew to Los Angeles and they had lunch. According to Minty, though she remained speechless during their initial encounter, she knew "right away" that she would marry the married man. "There was an instant attraction: he had something that just meshed," she
told The Times of London
. "I've never had that before… The rest is history." MacGraw and McQueen divorced in 1978 and two years later, he married Minty. But one of the late actor's closest friends told Vanity Fair: "He did love Barbara,
…Steve loved Ali MacGraw more than he loved anyone else in his entire life. Until the day he died he was madly in love with her." The love triangle continues post-mortem.
