Hilary Duff

Hilary Duff made a swift transition from teen star to committed wife last year when she married Canadian hockey player Mike Comrie. Her Lizzie McGuire days have long been a distant memory, but the news that the singer-actress is pregnant is still a bit hard to fathom. Duff posted the announcement in conjunction with her first anniversary on her official website. “We are extremely happy and ready to start this new chapter of our lives,” she wrote.

Britney Spears

Britney Spears was 17 when she traded in her Mickey Mouse Club persona for a naughty-schoolgirl outfit in the music video for her first hit single, "Baby One More Time." Spears’ early days of swearing off sex until marriage didn’t last long, and it turned out that she wasn’t “that innocent.” “Smoking, drinking, sex—why is it such a big deal for me?” she proclaimed to People magazine in 2002. Soon she was gyrating in sexually charged music videos like "I'm a Slave for You" and making out with Madonna onstage at the 2003 MTV Video Music Awards. In 2005, when Spears was only 24 and at the height of her career, she had her first child, Sean Preston, with husband Kevin Federline. Controversy erupted when the young mother was photographed driving with her 4-month-old son in her lap. (She claimed she was being chased by paparazzi and didn’t have time to strap baby Sean into his car seat.) She gave birth to Jayden James Federline in September 2006, and filed for divorce from her husband two months later. Not long after the breakup, Spears started partying with Paris Hilton, drinking excessively, and unwittingly flashing the paparazzi while her babies were home with the nanny. Spears hit rock bottom in February 2007 when, in the midst of a very public nervous breakdown, she randomly shaved her head and subsequently checked into Malibu’s Promises rehab center. The next year was a rocky one—after failing to submit a drug test, Spears temporarily lost custody of her kids and was ordered by a judge to spend eight hours a week working with a “parenting coach” who supervised her interactions with Sean Preston and Jayden James. In an August 2008 interview with OK! magazine, Spears said she wanted her sons to have a “more normal childhood” than she had. It wasn’t until this spring that she regained primary custody of the boys after a three-year battle with Federline.

Jamie Lynn Spears

While Britney briefly touted her virginal image to appeal to a certain audience, sex was never an issue in Jamie Lynn Spears’ acting career until the 16-year-old star of Nickelodeon’s Zooey 101 announced she was pregnant with longtime boyfriend Casey Aldridge’s child. "I didn't believe it because Jamie Lynn's always been so conscientious," said mother Lynne Spears. "She's never late for her curfew. I was in shock.” Jamie Lynn maintained a low profile during her pregnancy and received a lot of help from her mom when baby Maggie was born (her relationship with Aldridge fizzled soon after). Jamie Lynn, now 20, has not yet revived her acting career, but 3-year-old Maggie is already showing promise as a performer. In a recent YouTube debut, Maggie sang a “cover” of aunt Britney’s “Up ‘N Down” from the singer’s album Femme Fatale.

Kate Hudson

Kate Hudson didn’t think twice before marrying Black Crowes lead singer Chris Robinson in December 2000, less than a year after the couple had met. “When I first met Chris, everything just seemed to become very clear,” Hudson told People in 2003, though she admitted that they were “volatile” in the beginning. “We were so in love and passionate, and then we would just hate each other and throw stuff around, and then we would travel to Paris for a week.” At the ripe age of 24, Hudson gave birth to son Ryder, shooting down rumors that her marriage was on the rocks. Two years later, the rumors proved to be true when Hudson and Robinson announced they were separating. Hudson, who recently gave birth to her second child with boyfriend and Muse frontman Matt Bellamy, told People she felt younger being pregnant at 32 than she did at 24. “I didn’t feel like I was having a baby young … [Ryder] was my family’s first grandkid, and to me it just felt normal,” she said. As both she and Ryder got older and her friends started having children, she began to realize that she was a “young mother,” but insists she has no regrets. “I’m so happy that I had a child so young. He is my buddy.”

Ashley Simpson

Considering her sister, Jessica, filed for divorce from Nick Lachey when she was just 25, one would think Ashley Simpson might have taken her time before getting hitched. But at 23, Ashley married Fall Out Boy bassist Pete Wentz and announced she was pregnant a few months after the wedding. “The day she found out she was pregnant, she became a woman,” said her father, Joe, who has always had a hands-on role in his daughters’ careers and a reputation for meddling in their relationships. Ashley Simpson-Wentz gave birth to Bronx Mowgli Wentz when she was 24, but the family was torn apart when she filed for divorce just two years later, citing “irreconcilable differences.” In the divorce papers she sought joint legal custody and primary physical custody of their 2-year-old son. “We remain friends and deeply committed and loving parents to our son Bronx, whose happiness and well-being remains our number one priority,” the former lovebirds said in a statement. Young as she was, the devoted mother “made a conscious decision to get out of the [music] business,” though she somehow found the time to juggle parenting while starring in Broadway’s Chicago a year after Bronx was born. Once the show ended and Pete went back to touring, “she hated him being away and said she felt like a single mother,” a source told Radar

Bristol Palin

When 18-year-old Bristol Palin announced she was pregnant shortly after her conservative mother was picked to be John McCain’s running mate in the 2008 presidential election, Mama Grizzly reportedly handled the news well. In a joint statement with her husband, Sarah Palin said Bristol “has our unconditional love and support.” Though Bristol had planned to marry the father of her child, then-boyfriend Levi Johnston, the two split in March 2009, just months after Tripp Mitchell Easton Johnston was born. In a tell-all memoir released earlier this summer, Bristol dishes about her relationship with Tripp’s father, who allegedly said his child “Better be a f---ing boy” upon learning she was pregnant. On losing her virginity to Johnston, Palin writes, she felt “more like it was stolen.” Bristol has since moved on from the drama with Johnston, and is set to star in a reality-TV show that follows Palin and  nearly 3-year-old Tripp as they leave Alaska behind to move in with her Dancing With the Stars partner in Los Angeles.

Camila Alves

Matthew McConaughey swooped in on Brazilian swimsuit model and handbag designer Camila Alves when she was just 22. Despite the 12-year age gap, their relationship quickly became serious, and the couple welcomed baby Levi Alves McConaughey two years after they met. Alves seemed to be a pretty confident young mama at 24 and wasn’t concerned about marriage. “For me, the most important thing is that we have a healthy and peaceful home and that we’re happy,” she said in an interview after Levi was born. Earlier this year, Alves, 27, gave birth to a baby girl, Vida Alves McConaughey. “It’s easier with the second child, because you know what she’ll be like,” she told Us Weekly.

Candace Cameron Bure

It wasn’t easy to see the young stars of Full House grow up. Candace Cameron Bure, a.k.a. D. J. Tanner, shocked fans of the show in 1998 when, at 22,  she had her first child with NHL star Valeri Bure. The happy husband and wife welcomed more additions to their family in 2000 and 2002. Bure seems to enjoy motherhood. “It’s amazing. My kids have grown me in ways I never knew possible,” she told OK! magazine. Apparently, Bure’s eldest daughter, Natasha, is also getting into the family business. “My daughter’s dabbling in showbiz, and she’s done a few commercials. She’s auditioned for some movies and shows, so I’m letting her pursue that. I’m OK with it.”

Kendra Wilkinson

Kendra Wilkinson, Hugh Hefner’s former girlfriend, gave birth to a son (not Hef’s) in 2009, when she was just 24. She and football player Hank Baskett got married at the Playboy mansion shortly after announcing Wilkinson’s pregnancy. Mere days after giving birth, Wilkinson released the first photos of her new son, Hank Baskett IV, to OK! magazine. She says of motherhood, “It’s amazing … because we created life and now we get to see all the stages of life. It’s the most amazing, magical thing you could ever go through … seeing life start and then seeing every stage.”

Niki Taylor

Model Niki Taylor gave birth to twin boys at the age of 19. She was married to first husband Matt Martinez at the time. The marriage fell apart soon after the birth. She says, “I was young and thought I was in love. So when the babies came, it was not something I signed up for. We were just two totally different people and after two totally different things. I was pregnant at 18, had [Jake and Hunter] at 19 and divorced by 21 … it was a lot on my plate for my young 20s!” After remarrying NASCAR driver Burney Lamar, she gave birth to a daughter in 2009. Now 36, Taylor says that giving birth to her daughter was an entirely different experience. She says, “I’m in love with my husband. It was a totally different situation with Jake and Hunter’s [dad]. This is just a walk in the park!”

Reese Witherspoon

Actress Reese Witherspoon gave birth to daughter Ava on Sept. 9, 1999. Ava was Witherspoon’s first child with husband Ryan Phillippe. A son followed in October 2003. Witherspoon says, “I know it’s corny, but being a parent, to me, is such a great privilege, that I get to chaperone these beautiful little souls through life. They astound me with their knowledge and their humor. Parenthood is not at all what I expected it to be. I thought you make little people in your image. But they are just nothing like me or their father [her now ex-husband, Philippe]. They are their own individuals.”
