The mother of all meltdowns, Charlie Sheen’s erratic—and endlessly entertaining—behavior this year undoubtedly takes the cake. It all started in January when the actor “
voluntarily entered an undisclosed rehabilitation center” and production on his hit show Two and a Half Men went on hiatus. A month later, pictures of Sheen with three live-in girlfriends—including a porn star and an ex-nanny, whom he called “goddesses”—emerged. Then came the interview on , where Sheen railed against CBS executives who would not let him go back to work (and who then fired him). On programs like The Dan Patrick Radio Show Today and Good Morning America, Sheen spewed some of the best soundbites of the year. “I am on a drug, it’s called Charlie Sheen! It’s not available because if you try it once, you will die. Your face will melt off and your children will weep over your exploded body, ” he once said. On another occasion, he told an interviewer, “You borrow my brain for five seconds and you’d just be like, ‘Dude, can’t handle it, unplug this bastard.’” Sheen has since settled down a bit, but “ winning” and “ tiger blood” remain two of the most memorable catch phrases of the year.

While in New York City last month for her Broadway run in
Fela!, R&B legend Patti LaBelle exhibited some exceedingly diva behavior. Upon seeing a woman let her 18-month-old little girl wander too far in the lobby of her apartment building, LaBelle took action in the form of a full-on meltdown. The singer allegedly chastised the woman for letting the child stray, but when the mother snapped back at LaBelle and told her it was none of her business, LaBelle lost it. The singer reportedly began screaming obscenities and spraying the mother—and the child—with bottled water. A lawsuit followed. Alec Baldwin
Alec Baldwin may play a (mostly) cool and collected Jack Donaghy on NBC’s
30 Rock, but the real-life Baldwin is as prone to meltdowns as any other celebrity—just ask the flight attendants of American Airlines. While waiting on a plane about to fly from New York to Los Angeles in December, Baldwin was asked by an attendant to turn off his cell phone. This didn’t go over well with the actor. He was, after all, in the middle of a game of “Words With Friends.” Flight attendants said that the actor became “violent” and “aggressive” toward the staff and eventually locked himself in a bathroom to continue playing. After getting kicked off the flight, Baldwin took the fight to Twitter, where he lashed out at American airlines: “Flight attendant on American reamed me out 4 playing WORDS W FRIENDS while we sat at the gate, not moving. #nowonderamericaairisbankrupt” and “#theresalwaysunited Last flight w American. Where retired Catholic school gym teachers from the 1950′s find jobs as flight attendants.” The stunt resulted in a shutdown of Baldwin’s Twitter account and an apology to his fellow passengers on the flight. Former Christian Dior creative director John Galliano, went too far, even for him, when he got
caught on tape declaring to fellow patrons at a Paris bar. “I love Hitler…People like you would be dead” and “your mothers, your forefathers, would all be f---ing gassed,” the bad boy of the fashion world said. The video emerged shortly after Galliano was arrested for allegedly assaulting a couple at the same bar and shouting anti-Semitic slurs at them, though the video did not appear to be from the same evening. The scandal resulted in Galliano’s dismissal from Dior and condemnation from former clients like Natalie Portman, who said she was “deeply shocked and disgusted” and that “as an individual who is proud to be Jewish, I will not be associated with Mr. Galliano in any way.” Galliano then reportedly entered a rehab clinic in Arizona to try to deal with any issues he might have with his own Jewish heritage. French Golden Globe–winning actor
Gerard Depardieu forsook toilets altogether on his flight from Paris to Dublin. Depardieu relieved himself by urinating in the cabin of a CityJet plane when attendants informed him that he would have to wait to use the bathroom. The impromptu bathroom break caused a two-hour delay as the plane had to return to the gate for cleanup. The airline seems to have maintained a sense of humor about the incident, however, as it tweeted “As you may have seen on the news, we are busy mopping the floors of one of our planes this morning.” Ida Mae Astute, ABC / Getty Images Chris Brown
Ever since his 2009 arrest for brutally
beating his then-girlfriend Rihanna, hip-hop star Chris Brown has worked hard to gloss up his image and win back his fans. But when he was asked to talk about the incident on Good Morning America in March, it became clear that the singer still has some anger issues. According to TMZ, Brown stormed into his dressing room immediately after the interview, screaming so loudly that people in hair and makeup called security. He then allegedly broke a dressing-room window with a chair and bailed on his second scheduled performance. On his way out of the building, Brown reportedly stepped into a producer’s way and stared him down before bystanders stepped in to defuse the situation. The singer’s meltdown then carried over onto his Twitter, where he posted, “I'm so over people bringing this past s--t up!!! Yet we praise Charlie sheen and other celebs for there bulls--t." Within the first two weeks of 2011,
Aguilera allegedly launched into a verbal attack of her Burlesque costar Julianne Hough at a pre–Golden Globes party in West Hollywood, supposedly even going so far as to threaten to sabotage Hough’s budding country-music career. Three weeks later came Xtina’s Super Bowl debacle, when she mixed up the words to the national anthem. Then came the public intoxication. The singer and Burlesque set assistant Matthew Rutler were both booked for alcohol misdemeanors in March, she for public intoxication and he for driving under the influence. Aguilera’s public image was not helped by some weight gain—and the outfits she chose that made her fodder for the press. Most notably, at a Michael Jackson tribute concert in October, Aguilera sported matted hair, a corset, fishnet tights, and heavy makeup that led some to call her “a mess.” Kevin Winter / Getty Images Nicolas Cage
In the last few weeks of December 2010, Oscar-winning actor Nicolas Cage had a
meltdown outside of a Romanian nightclub. Captured on video, Cage shouted, “I’ll f---ing die because of honor! I’ll f---ing die right now!” The actor lost it again in April of this year when he was arrested on charges of domestic abuse and disturbing the peace. TMZ reported that the actor was “very drunk” and loudly arguing with his wife on a street in New Orleans when a cabdriver, who allegedly saw Cage grab his wife, called the police. When officers showed up, Cage reportedly reacted by banging his fists on parked cars and trying to escape in a cab. Cage then allegedly began to scream at officers, “Why don’t you just arrest me?” The cops complied. The couple was allegedly arguing over the address of an apartment they were renting in New Orleans. Nicole Scherzinger & Jennifer Lopez
When it comes to reality-show judging, Nicole Scherzinger and Jennifer Lopez might take their jobs a bit too seriously.
X Factor judge Scherzinger suffered a full-on meltdown backstage after she eliminated teen singer and crowd favorite Rachel Crow from the competition. Upon being eliminated, Crow collapsed to the floor in tears, prompting the audience to boo Scherzinger off the stage and into her dressing room, where she reportedly remained in tears for an hour and a half. Oddly enough, the person who was there to comfort Scherzinger backstage was none other than Crow, who pulled herself together and decided to talk it out with the judge. The two are apparently now on amiable terms, since Crow tweeted “Please don’t be angry with @nicolescherzy she was put in such a tough position. I love u all so much.” Lopez, an American Idol judge, suffered a similar fate when she had to cut fan favorite Chris Medina (memorable for his story of being the primary caregiver to his brain-damaged fiancée, who was injured in a car crash a mere two months before the couple was to be married) from the competition. She broke down in uncontrollable tears and said, “I don’t want to do this anymore” between sobs. She later explained her behavior by saying, “I didn’t want to be a part of that moment in his life…He handled it with such dignity and such class—and that made it worse for me.” Kika Press / Pacific Coast News Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi
The entire fourth season of the hit reality series
Jersey Shore saw Nicole “Snooki” Polizzi spiral into more and more of a meltdown-prone mess. Between drama with her boyfriend back home, violent, glass-vase-throwing fights with Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino, and an alarming number of drunken debacles, the show could have largely survived just off the scandals that Snooki provided. At one point, she even crashed into a police car, sending two Italian officers to the hospital for minor injuries. Even off the set of Jersey Shore, the drama continues: Snooki is currently ringing in 2012 with a $7 million merchandising lawsuit. Frederick M. Brown / Getty Images Brett Ratner
After this year, the man behind the
Rush Hour films and Tower Heist will probably be remembered less for his films than for his remarkable ability to say exactly the wrong thing at every opportunity. While promoting Tower Heist, and while slated to be the host at next year’s Academy Awards, Ratner appeared on a number of radio and television programs, including The Howard Stern Show. Ratner dished on his former relationships with actresses such as Olivia Munn (“She was hanging out on my set of After the Sunset, I banged her a few times…but I forgot her.”) and Lindsay Lohan (whom he forced to get checked for STDs before having sex with her when she was “very young,” he claimed). After a screening of Tower Heist, Ratner found himself the target of heavy criticism when he told his audience that he doesn’t need to rehearse while making films because “rehearsal is for fags.” The antigay slur cost Ratner his Oscars hosting gig, though he issued a public apology of sorts, saying, “I apologize for any offense my remarks caused. It was a dumb way of expressing myself. Everyone who knows me knows that I don’t have a prejudiced bone in my body. But as a storyteller I should have been much more thoughtful about the power of language and my choice of words.” Christopher Polk / Getty Images Taylor Armstrong
Taylor Armstrong, of
Real Housewives of Beverly Hills fame, has had an extremely tough year. The reality star went through several on-camera meltdowns while filming the show, notably while at a wine-tasting event. Fellow housewife Camille Grammer triggered Armstrong’s ugly side when she exposed to her fellow wine-tasters—and the cameras—the abusive relationship Armstrong had suffered with her estranged husband Russell, who committed suicide in August. After Grammer’s friend Dedra confronted Armstrong for ignoring Grammer’s apologies, a hysterical screaming match between the two women ensued. Later, on the Bravo talk show Watch What Happens Live, Armstrong confessed she “was a little drunk, absolutely, and a little crazy. I was dealing with so much and my biggest fears were unraveling.” Armstrong has since penned a memoir, Hiding From Reality: My Story of Love, Loss and Finding the Courage Within, which divulges with readers the traumas she endured while married to Russell Armstrong.
