The Daily Beast takes a look at the online vendors who are marketing marital aids with modesty.12.30.11 9:45 AM ETCharles Benavidez / Getty ImagesChristian, Jewish, and Muslim entrepreneurs have launched “religious” sex-toy shops online in an effort to improve pious couples’ sex lives—and strengthen the marital bond. Kosher Sex ToysKosher Sex Toys launched online this fall and markets products to modest Orthodox Jewish couples. Book 22Book 22 was the first site to sell marital aids aimed at evangelical Christians, and for 10 years has been helmed by Oregon-based therapist Joy Wilson. Covenant SpiceCovenant Spice boasts that it sells “top-quality Christian sexual aids, Christian lingerie, and Christian sex toys for couples,” and features a list of its bestsellers on the website’s homepage. Hookin’ Up HolyWith the tagline, “couples who play together, stay together,” Hookin’ Up Holy is another competitor in the Christian sex-toy space. They even price-match. Intimacy of EdenIntimacy of Eden is a Christian site with a slick design. It stocks plenty of toys and many books that offer sex advice. El AsiraAbdelaziz Aouragh, the Dutch Muslim founder of El Asira, says he believes that he is helping promote sexual well-being with his site. Consulting scholars, he learned that in Islam, “man and woman must reach their peak” during intercourse, and that only then is the “deed complete.” Top SellersEl Asira means “The Society” in Arabic, and Aouragh says high-end oils and lubricants like these sell best. Customer RatingsOne Book 22 customer, Joyce, said she had her first orgasm when she was nearly 60, after purchasing the Turbo 8 Accelerator. “I’m a Christian, but this is awesome,” she said. Modest MarketingKosher Sex Toys owner Gavriel rewrites product descriptions and removes any packaging deemed offensive from the devices he sells. He even renames many of them so that they sound less crude. Saying It Without Saying ItOn the Kosher Sex Toys site, Gavriel sells this flogger, thoroughly describing its appearance without telling what it does (for religious modesty reasons).
