The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is giving $10 million to the Smithsonian's planned National Museum of African-American History and Culture, which will be built on the National Mall in Washington, DC. The grant will provide for the construction and design of the new museum. The museum, which organizers say will make the stories of African Americans available to everyone, is expected to break ground in 2012, and to open in 2015. Construction will cost around $500 million, and Congress will provide half of those funds.
