Newly elected Republican congressman Greg Gianforte plans to plead guilty to assaulting reporter Ben Jacobs the day before winning the special election in Montana. Gallatin County Attorney Marty Lambert told the AP that Gianforte will enter his plea in court on Monday. Jacobs, of The Guardian (and formerly The Daily Beast) said on May 24 that Gianforte knocked him to ground when he attempted to ask a question. Lambert said he will recommend a penalty to Justice of the Peace Rick West at Monday's hearing, but did not say what the recommendation would be. Misdemeanor assault convictions in Montana carry a maximum penalty of six months in prison and a $500 fine.
