The San Francisco Giants made baseball history by winning a protest over their rain-shortened Tuesday night game against the Chicago Cubs. For the first time in 28 years, Major League Baseball upheld a protest involving a game. Now, the Giants and Cubs will have to resume play on Thursday from the bottom of the fifth inning when the game was called Tuesday night. Major League Baseball concluded there was a “malfunction of a mechanical field device under control of the home club” that made the grounds crew ”unable to properly deploy the tarp after the rain worsened.” As a result, it decided the game should be suspended rather than called as a win for the Cubs, who were up 2-0. However, MLB did deny the Giants’ request to have the game considered a Cubs forfeit.
